1.5 oz Gin
.75 oz Lemon Juice
.5 oz Maraschino Liqueur
.25 oz Crème de violette
Combine all ingredients in a shaker filled with ice. Shake and strain into a chilled coupe and garnish with a maraschino cherry.
The aviation is an interesting classic that is a great introduction to using crème de violette in a cocktail. The floral notes of the crème de violette and the richness of the maraschino come together to create a complex drink. This drink is beautiful. People suspect that the name "aviation" is related to the its bluish-purple hue and is supposed to remind you of the sky.
Not a lot of drinks use crème de violette, but this drink is so good that it's worth picking some up.
Something to keep in mind is that crème de violette can really overpower a drink if you use too much. Its floral flavor can drown out all of the over flavors in a drink and make it taste like a bowl of potpourri. But when you get the right amount, it adds a beautiful floral flavor that creates a refreshing and complex drink. That's why the our recipe for the aviation only uses .25 oz of it, and I'd strongly suggest not to use any more than that.
